The Development of the National AMU Surveillance System for Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) Bangladesh aims to establish a centralized digital platform to monitor and analyze antimicrobial use nationwide. This initiative supports efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and strengthen pharmaceutical governance through improved data collection, reporting, and regulatory oversight.
To formally commence this critical initiative, the DGDA hosted the Inception Meeting on June 24, 2025, at the DGDA Conference Room, Mohakhali, Dhaka. The meeting brought together key national and international stakeholders including representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), DGDA, and JBRSOFT, who participated in person. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) team from Denmark joined virtually, contributing valuable international insights and expertise on the existing AMU surveillance systems.
During the session, the DVFA team delivered a presentation on VetStat, Denmark’s national antimicrobial use surveillance platform. The presentation provided an overview of the system’s core functionalities, including the data flow structure, the process for generating reports, and how medicinal product information is organized and managed within the platform. This served as a reference point for the development of Bangladesh’s own system, showcasing practical approaches and lessons learned from international experience.
Following this, the JBRSOFT team shared a comprehensive presentation outlining the proposed system design for the National AMU Surveillance System. Their presentation included detailed components such as the system architecture, user interface wireframes, and mock-up design modules, offering a clear visualization of how the platform will operate. They also presented an overview of user roles and responsibilities across different stakeholder groups, along with a proposed implementation timeline, identifying major phases and development milestones.
Together, these presentations laid a strong technical and strategic foundation for the project. By integrating global best practices with local regulatory requirements, the initiative aims to deliver a robust, scalable, and context-appropriate digital solution that will support evidence-based policymaking and promote the responsible use of antimicrobials in Bangladesh.
In summary, the Inception Meeting marks a pivotal beginning for the development of the National AMU Surveillance System, reinforcing Bangladesh’s commitment to addressing the AMR challenge through digital innovation and cross-sectoral collaboration. With continued support from international partners and active engagement from local stakeholders, the system is poised to play a central role in strengthening the country’s pharmaceutical governance and safeguarding public health for years to come.
Sincere thanks to DGDA for hosting and leading the initiative, and to WHO for their support. We also appreciate the DVFA team and other international participants who joined online and shared their expertise. Your collaboration is key to building an effective AMU surveillance system for Bangladesh.
